Scope Question

Hello People,Im new here and have a scope question.I was shooting with some people, and noticed every time they adjusted their scopes they would tap on the adjustment sides of their scopes with a screwdriver.I asked why and they said you must do this with new scopes.Ive never done this or seen it done.Is there any truth to this. Thanks,Tim

It’s something that shouldn’t need to be done with good scopes. But with mediocre scopes you can sometimes find that the “gubbins” inside don’t move properly and for that reason a little tap on the turrets can make sure everything works OK.
I have a variety of scopes and I always tap them when adjusting, although it is mainly out of habit due to the rimfires only having cheaper Simmons scopes on them.
As long as you only tap them and don’t bash the sh!te out of them then it doesn’t hurt to do this and does confirm that they have adjusted properly.

Never heard of that, usually when you dial in an adjustment you go a few clicks past and then wind back. This takes the backlash out and ensures yopu are where you wnat to be. Anybody hitting scopes with anything is asking from trouble in my book.

Yeah I'll second that, you dont want to be tapping/hitting a scope around!

In the 24 years of shooting ive never come across this technique before, i have never done it with airguns, rimfire or my.243. So your saying if you buy a relatively cheap scope (£150) you need to tap it when zeroing your rifle???. Seem strange that someone is going to build a delecate optical instrument that needs this sort of treatment. Interesting
