I can perhaps help with this as I take my gun overseas for competitions. Firstly for EU countries you will need a European Firearms Permit obtainable free from your local firearms licensing department. These last the same length as your certificate and take a few weeks to obtain.

For some, but not all, EU countries this is sufficient however some require additional customs and/or police authority. The only way to be sure is to check with the local consulate of the country you intend to take them to.

As far as travel is concerned some budget airlines will not carry firearms. Ryanair and Jet2 certainly will not. I believe Easyjet will. I have found, generally speaking, budget airlines are the most inflexible which more expensive carriers are more accomodating.

Providing you obtain all the necessary paperwork well in advance carrying firearms overseas is not too much of a problem.

I'm with Janski on this.

I've taken shotguns abroad several times and each time has been totally hassle free. Easyjet are due to stop carrying any firearms although were not able to give me a reason why. BA are happy to take shotguns and section 1 items and are, in my experience, a pleasure to deal with. Czech Airlines are also happy to carry firearms.

One of the good side affects of taking a legal shotgun into an airport is the lack of queues; after introducing myself to security and explaining the situation, I've always been taken straight to check-in, much to the chagrine of the passengers behind me!

Make sure you apply for your European Firearms Pass in good time, if you have a busy authority they can take a while to come through.
