Lightbulb Clay Pigeon Shooting Association (CPSA)

Quote:
Clay pigeon shooting is the art of shooting at special flying targets, known as clay pigeons or clay targets, with a shotgun.

The terminology commonly used by clay shooters often relates to times past, when live pigeon competitions were held. Although such competitions were made illegal in 1921, a target is still called a 'target', a hit is referred to as a 'hit' and the machine which projects the targets is known as a 'trap'.

Clay pigeon shooting is currently enjoyed by 9 to 90 year olds of either sex. It is a hobby that can provide great personal fulfilment, and may be enjoyed with just a few friends on a very informal basis, in a more organised fashion at a local gun club or shooting school, or at competition level from registered CPSA events to County, Regional, National and International competitions including the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

I have always referred to broken clays as 'kills'. For example-'Pair killed' when both clays of a pair are broken or 'Killed and lost' when only the first clay of a pair is broken,or am I the odd one out?

Political correctness

The CPSA are now calling clay pigeons targets due to political correctness.
If when shooting clays and I receive a broken clay it's called a no bird not a no target!
I am sick to death of the way this organisation is being run.
All it does is seemingly alienate the membership by using "pc speak" instead of being a bit more aggresive and take on these groups who want to have shooting banned.
I feel that they should fight the legislation coming to ban lead shot because if it does go that will be the end of shooting as we know it.
Don't you find it funny how the price of lead cartridges is nearly the same price as steel shot are we ready for a change?
Let's carry on calling clays "birds" not "targets" and get on with our lives.
Thats what was voted against the wishes of the board at the CPSA agm.

PC Terminology

The problem with PC termonology is how legislators and authorities percieve the sport of Clay Target shooting. With just 25,000 members, the CPSA is a tiny body fighting an uphill battle against various anti-hunting anti-gun and anti-noise bodies and public perception.
To do this at all effectively it needs representation ( ie lobbying parliment etc), and this costs money. As the membership fees in themselves do not generate enough to fully service member's needs as they are, gaining corporate sponsership ( eg Mitsubushi) in an important part of the CPSA budget, and to recruit these people the sport does need to adopt a Politically Correct face that separates it from gun crime, shooting nice little furry things etc.
Internally, the dedicated clay pigeon shooter can still kill their bird, thrown out from a trap, and even shoot teals, crows and rabbits - but the corporate sponsers need to know they are not associating themselves with anything less than an Olympic Target Sport at which Britain Excels. Like it or not, the PC speak is a carefully thought out and essential part of raising money to fight for the future of our sport and keep it alive.
